“Illustrators” is the title of the next exhibition of Tomi Ungerer’s work, which is an exhibition of the museums collection of 20th European and American Illustrators.
This exhibition opens at the Musee Tomi Ungerer (Tomi Ungerer Museum) is Strasbourg on the 2nd of March 2012 and will run until the 31st July 2012.
The thirteenth exhibition of the Musee Tomi Ungerer allow us to see pieces in the collection showing work by artists Andre François, Robert Gernhardt, Maurice Henry, Françoise Hollenstein, Ronald Searle, F.K. Waechter and Robert Weaver. The visit presents genre and graphic styles of a varied nature from children’s drawings to advertising to caricatures for the press, and drawings after nature. It explores the richness and diversity of this artistic sector, at times unexpected and laden with surprise.
Several exceptional series are on exhibit for this special occasion. Among the work on view : a rare collection of original drawings by André François (1915-2005) some of which were published in the New York Times and Vogue and a series of humoristic drawings by Maurice Henry (1907-1984), friend of the surrealists, published in the book Gags. The “New school of Frankfort”, acclaimed in Germany for the caustic tone of its draftsmen is represented here by Robert Gernhardt (1937-1984), and F.K. Waechter (1937-2006). The American Robert Weaver (1924-1984), longtime instructor at the famous School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York is on view with his portraits and reporting documented by designs depicting American life in the 1960’s. From Francoise Hollenstein, illustrator of children’s books we find on exhibit vibrant originals of the record-book Peter and the Wolf after the musical tale by Prokofiev (Hatier, 1979). The recently deceased British artist Ronald Searle (1920-2011) whose satirical and nonsensical drawings are known to all, is another interesting element of this visit that totals nearly a hundred works and documents.
